Information about Singapore


The Republic of Singapore sits only 137km north of the Equator, separated from Peninsular Malaysia by the Strait of Johor and from Indonesia by the Strait of Singapore. Singapore is made up of the main island which is 42km long by 23km wide and 63 other smaller islands. Singapore has a total area of approximately 693 sq km.

Singapore's climate is warm and humid, averaging between 23ºC and 31ºC, with an average of 2.3 metres of rain annually. The highest point is 163m at Bukit Timah Peak.

The total population of Singapore is 4.6 million (2007 data). This figure includes approximately 1 million foreigners. The three major ethnic groups within the local community are Chinese (77 per cent), Malay (14 per cent), and Indians (8 per cent). The official languages of Singapore are Malay, Chinese (Mandarin), Tamil and English. English is the language of administration and is widely spoken.

Jurong Bird Park

Southeast Asia's largest bird park, Jurong Bird Park is home to over 8,000 birds of 600 species from all over the world. Highlights include the world's largest collection of Southeast Asian Hornbills and South American Toucans, and the world's second largest penguin exhibit.

Travelling within the park is a breeze, allowing visitors to have a bird's eye view of the park grounds, and accompanied by the commentary, it provides a relaxing ride while at the same time teaching visitors new information.

Daily shows include Breakfast with the Birds (9am-llam), Birds of Prey, Penguin Feeding Time and the Jurong Bird Park All Stars Bird show.


Butterfly Park and Insects kingdom

Enjoy watching exotic species of butterflies in this butterfly aviary. Visitors can also spot the well-camouflaged butterflies in the Insect Safari Tunnel.

Explore over 2,500 species of insects categorized by their geographical locations.

You can get to see rare species including fist-sized horned beetles and metallic blue butterflies. Each and every species has a detailed explanation of its origin. This is a great education tour for children and families.



The Merlion


The Merlion (8.6 metres high and weighs 70 tonnes), now located in the new Merlion Park (which is 2,500 square metre large) next to the Esplanade, was cleaned and restored after it moved from beside the Esplanade Bridge (120 metres away from its present home) to its present site in April 2002.

The place was chosen as it ensures that the Merlion continued to enjoy a prominent location, so that visitors can have an unhindered view of it.

Singapore is famous for its variety of food and shopping.

Orchard Road, would be the most popular and most commonly heard names if anyone should mention about shopping. This place is the central hub, also known as the 'city' of Singapore, and it is well known among tourists.

Orchard Road offers major departmental stores, supermarkets, movie theatres, restaurants. famous hotels and other entertainment outlets.


The main shopping complexes would be Centrepoint, The Far East Plaza, Paragon, Ngee Ann City, Orchard Point, Far East Shopping Centre, Forum the Shopping Mall, Lucky Plaza, Orchard Emerald, Orchard Plaza, Orchard Towers, Orchard Plaza Wisma Atria, Shaw House, Shaw Centre, Tanglin Place and Tanglin Mall.


Far East Plaza

Over 600 retailers, selling from youths' hip and happening clothing and apparel, video stores, electronics, food, tattoo shops, hair and beauty salons, and so much more. Ideally the teenagers' hang out.





Tangs
Emporium of Tang family that lies in Singapore Marriot which sells household items, apparels to food. Singapore's shopping flagship in since 1932.

Tangs is a company that specializes in retail market, selling goods to customers. It is based in Singapore, and owns Singapore's oldest store which has become an icon of the Singapore retail market.
